“I brought snacks!” Piper announced when she arrived at Milla’s house the next day. Zahra had called Milla after school on Friday and told her she would be able to come over—which meant their meeting was on! Milla had been waiting impatiently all morning for her friends to arrive. Piper showed up first. “It’s an invention I’m calling Dream Big bars. Nut-free and pig-safe. Things got a little wonky with the batter, so they don’t look all that pretty, but they taste okay.”

“I’m sure they’re great,” Milla said. “And Chocolate Chip will be very happy you thought of him.”

Ruby showed up next, with her twin brother in tow. “Can I meet your pig, too?” Henry asked.

“Sure, come on. He’s in the backyard,” Milla said, holding the door open for both of them. Even though Henry was wild and crazy at school, Milla thought he seemed like a really nice guy. He always included everyone when he organized recess games, and Milla had a feeling there was more to Henry than the loud, show-offy kid who was often getting into trouble for goofing off. Henry kneeled right down on the ground with Chip to play and cuddle. He was like a whole different person outside of school!

Henry had only been there for a few minutes when Ruby yanked him up and announced, “Time’s up, Hen. You’re not a member of the Daring Dreamers Club, so it’s time for you to go.”

Henry grumbled and said, “Your advisory group is way more fun than mine is. You have a pig mascot!”

“Lucky for us, sad for you,” Ruby said, shrugging. She led Henry to the front door and added, “Maybe you should do something to make your group more interesting. Our club rocks because we made it that way.”

When Mari arrived, she seemed a little unsure of how to act around Chip. “I’ve never met a pig in person before,” she said. “Do you pet him like a dog?” Milla let Mariana feed him some snacks to help break the ice, and soon the little pig curled up and fell asleep with his head on Mari’s lap.

“I think he likes you,” Milla told her.

“I know I like him!” Mari said.

Zahra was the last to arrive, and she came bearing gifts! She had made glass mosaic picture frames for everyone in the group. “These are beautiful!” Milla said, giving her a hug. “Thanks so much, Zahra.”

“No problem,” Zahra said. “I like to make stuff for friends.”

Milla said, “I’ll get my mom to take a Daring Dreamers Club photo, and then we can all frame them to take home!”

After they ate Piper’s bars, the girls headed out to the backyard. “One of my favorite things,” Milla told her friends, “is setting up adventures for Chocolate Chip here in the backyard. I make little stage sets using plants and old dolls or empty cardboard boxes and toy cars or whatever. Then I pretend Chip is the main character in a story and I write about the things he does.
